HPL is participating in two community events during the month of January. HPL volunteers are needed to facilitate library card sign-up, disperse library material, and provide information on library services/programs. Here are our upcoming events:
Annual MLK Parade
Volunteers are needed to assist during the MLK Parade, the third largest Parade in the U.S. During the MLK Parade, 200,000 spectators are expected and the parade has a viewing audience of more than 4,000,000. The parade consists of: 20 parade floats and 45 marching bands. The parade route is 2.5 miles - duration 1.5 hrs. Business Professionals of America (BPA) Texas Regional Conference
In collaboration with our partner - HISD, they are asking us to assist the Business Professional of America. The mission of Business Professionals of America is to contribute to the preparation of a world class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills. Volunteers are needed to serve as judges at one of the various business contests held for young adults. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the Houston area young adults in action. There will be a variety of events; one that will fit your area of interest/expertise. You will be viewing “today’s students becoming tomorrow’s professionals”. The conference is all day but the events are dispersed throughout the day. Volunteers can select half day or all day shifts. Lunch will be provided. Two judges needed
The student will conduct research on a topic and present findings in a research paper, an oral presentation, and respond to questions from a panel of judges. (Topic: Research the “Buy America” provision within the economic stimulus packages, the effects the provisions are having on trade, the way trade agreements have been alerted, effects on industries, the impact on American job markets, how might the provisions be revised and what changes might you suggest.)

The team will analyze existing and planned business environments involving the modernization of LANs and a WAN for a company and developing a strategy for the implementation of a network infrastructure that addresses the need of the defined business environment. The team will create a database driven web site with server-side functionality. The team is provided with the opportunity to design, build and present a working web application. (Topic: Create a social networking site that may resemble current popular social networking sites but of your own design.)

The team will work together to create a web site based on an assigned topic. (Topic: The 2011 BPA National Conference will be held in Washington, DC. Teams are to create a Web site about the historical monuments, memorials and unique points of interest around the capital city.)

Your firm will explore the needs of this start-up business and present them to Aunt Mabel.)

Three judges needed
The team will demonstrate the use of correct parliamentary procedure through a chairman’s ability to conduct a business meeting in a democratic manner that allows the members of the team to effectively participate. The team’s knowledge of parliamentary procedure will be examined through oral questions and an objective test.
