The HPL Academic and Continuing Education Scholarship Program provides financial support for Houston Public Library employees to further their education. Scholarships are available for continuing education workshops or for regular course work as part of a degree plan. Eligible applicants are full-time and part-time employees, in good standing, with one or more years of continuous employment with the library.
Full-time employees may be awarded up to $1500.00. Part-time employees may be awarded up to $500.00.

Purpose: The HPL Academic and Continuing education scholarship Program was initiated to provide financial assistance to Houston Public Library employees in furthering their education. This is available to persons interested in attending seminars or workshops and to undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing.
Amount: Up to $1,500.00 a year for full-time employees (dependent upon the number of applicants)
Up to $500.00 a year for part-time employees (dependent upon the number of applicants)
Deadline: Friday, April 2, 2010
Fields: All areas of study consistent with eligibility requirements
Who May Apply: Houston Public Library full-time and part-time employees in good standing with one or more years of continuous employment with the library. Scholarship recipients must wait 1 year before applying again. HPL Scholarship committee members are not eligible to apply for a scholarship. Scholarship recipients must present proof of payment, attendance, successful completion and/or passing grade earned for seminar, workshop or undergraduate/graduate course upon completion to the HPL Scholarship Program Administrator. Failure to present documentation of payment and successful completion may be subject to reimbursement to the HPL Scholarship fund.
Application Procedures: Application will consist of four parts:
(a) Completion of the attached application form.
(b) Attachment of a course/workshop/seminar registration form, an official degree plan
or an official transcript from an accredited college or university.
(c) A one-page essay demonstrating how the prospective course/workshop/seminar will
benefit the applicant and the Houston Public Library.
(d) A letter of recommendation from applicant’s supervisor, or manager.
Selection Criteria: Recipient will:
(a) submit appropriate documentation.
(b) demonstrate potential for successful completion of course/workshop/seminar.
(c) exhibit an understanding of the importance of continued education
and how it relates to the individual’s career objectives and current position.
(d) meet performance requirements indicating good standing in current position.
Selection Committee: Review committee appointed by the Library Director/designee will determine selection. If, in the opinion of the review committee, no applications meet all requirements as set forth, a scholarship will not be awarded. All decisions of the review committee are final.
The recipient(s) will be announced by the Library Director.
