Subject: Compass Center Computer guidelines

Please do not refer customers to the second floor to use the Compass Center computers for taxes, or homework.

This is not what those computers  are for, per the Compass Center Computer Usage Guidelines.

The guidelines are posted in the Compass Center and available through links on the sidebar of Cenblog ( http://hplcen.blogspot.com/.)

I have created a chart that expands on these guidelines.  Please take the time to look it over.

Compass Center Computer Usage: Yes or no?
Yes
  • College application process:  researching colleges, universities and schools; applying for admissions and/or financial aid (i.e. FAFSA); taking practice SAT, GRE, GED exams through HPL online databases.

  • Small Business Start-up: creating a business plan; researching industries & markets; creating a marketing/advertising plan.

  • Job seeking and job skills. Resumes, online employment applications, research on job leads.  Online employment-related training and tests.  Applying for Unemployment (Workforce Counselors can help with Unemployment and any task related to job seeking.)

  • Grant seeking, including searching theFoundation Directory Online andFoundation Grants to Individuals.

No
  • Homework.  Students aged 13-18 may use Teen Room computers for homework; those older than 18 need to check out a laptop or use public computers on the first or third floors.

  • Business activities, once you’re past the startup stage and open for business.  This includes doing taxes.  This includes building and maintaining your business website.

  • Timed tests that take more than 60 minutes. We can extend the time on a compass computer past the initial hour, but only if no one else is waiting to get on.  Since we can’t guarantee that, customers who need to take an online test that will last more than one hour should ask a manager about reserving Room 225 or Room 226.
