Reminders/info about Access Center usage

I just want to take a moment to remind everyone about the rules of the Access Center.

Please sign the patron in on the Access Center Log before letting the patron enter the Access Center (located on the HPL Blog on the right hand side…it is the second link under the heading “Useful Link”)

In reference to who is and is not allowed in the Access Center, Paty has summarized it very well.

“We limit the use of the purple phone to two people at a time only; however, if there are two people using the phone, there could be a third person using the equipment for the visually impaired.  Yes, only customers with hearing and visual needs are allowed. What we are trying to avoid is a large number of people congregating in the Access Center.  It has happened before with the purple phone.  We also need to use our common sense, for example, if someone with a visual disability comes in with a friend or a family member to assist them in some manner, we most likely will have allow that in person too, provided they are both using one piece of equipment and that the second person is not milling around playing with other equipment and not really assisting.”

All rules of the library also apply to the Access Center.

If you are at R1, please keep an eye on the Access Center when it is in use by including it in your roaming/pickup route.

Some of the most used equipments in the Access Center are:

Video Phone (purple phone)
SARA is a scanning/reading machine.  A document or page from a book can be placed on the machine to be read back to the patron.
CCTV is a magnifier. Items placed under the lens will be enlarged onto a monitor for viewing.
Two computers have the  ZoomText and JAWS software. ZoomText enlarges all items displayed on the computer screen. JAWS can read items displayed on the computer screen to the patron.

If you need help or have questions concerning the Access Center, please do not hesitate to contact me or Usha.

Thanks,

Nhu
