Summer Reading Program 2018

Hi all,

SRP registration opened today. Here is some quick info about SRP this year.

  • People can register on any computer, not just on the 4th floor.
  • Once again, participants are grouped by age level: young children 0-5, kids 6-12, and teens 13-18.
  • The biggest change is that we are measuring "days read" rather than "hours read." This is to encourage participants to sustain a regular leisure reading schedule rather than try and cram it all in.
    • 20 minutes read in one day = 1 day.
    • Prizes are awarded at registration, 10, 20, 30 days, and (for Kids and Teens only) 5 programs attended.

Drawings

Kids (ages 5-12) that log at least 1 day will be entered into a weekly drawing for a Kids Edition Amazon Kindle Fire. 1 winner per week.

Teens (ages 13-18) that log 30 days will be entered into a drawing for a pair of Skullcandy wireless headphones. 1 winner per location. Drawing will take place August 2, 2018.

Family Prize Pack

Families (1 adult + 1 youth) who complete SRP will win a Family Prize! In order to qualify, the child must complete the 30 day level and the adult must write 2 reviews (1 for an item read for the adult’s enjoyment and 1 for a youth item read with their child). Stay tuned for details about what the Family Prize is.

**As always, please do your best to answer any incoming calls or customer questions about SRP. As it stands now, we have the same information in Kids and Teens that you will find in this email or on the SRP webpage. Most other questions will need to be referred to Sara Pope, Rebecca Denham, or Corey Johnson. Prizes will be awarded in Kids and Teens like usual.**

Additionally, please see below this important information about SRP, from Sara Pope:

Registration for SRP is officially open! When you’re helping people register for SRP, it is highly encouraged that participants register themselves (instead of teachers registering their entire class, you or their parents registering for them, etc.). Beanstack has shared information with us that people that register themselves are more likely to actively participate in the program (log books, achieve reading goals, and collect prizes).

Regarding prizes: there has been a delay in the prize shipments.

**So, while anyone can register now, prizes will not be awarded until June 1st.**

Please don't award a partial prize, as there is not an easy way to reflect in Beanstack that part of a prize was not received.

The message that people get when they register reflects that they can go to their local library beginning June 1st to collect their registration prize. It also says this on the website (houstonlibrary.org/summer).

Please let the youth services team know if you have any questions!
